Maximum Cantilever

The maximum cantilever recommended for the Apollo Two-Piece Aluminium Batten System is 400mm.

Finishes

Aluminum is an excellent materiality as it offers an extensive range of finishing options. Finishing options include solid powdercoats, anodising and applying a timber effect powdercoat to achieve a natural timber look with an Aluminum Batten.

Powder Coating
We have full access to the catalogues of leading powder coat suppliers Interpon and Dulux. Please contact your MBS consultant to discuss the full range of colour options.

Please note: Some colours incur an additional charge (eg. Dulux’s Fluroset and Interpon’s D3020 ranges). Minimum order quantities may apply to some colours.

Installation

The Apollo two-piece aluminium batten system comprises of a base and cover plate connection to create a concealed fixing that is incredibly strong, rigid, and suitable for external applications. A base plate is first connected to your substrate and then the appropriate cover plate clicks over the base plate and creates your secure, concealed connection.

System Components Required
Base Plate
Cover Plate
Fixing Screws (min 10g screw required)
End Caps
Joiner Strips (if required)

Tools Required for installation
Drop Saw
Tape Measure
Spirit Level
Driver Bit
Drill / Driver

Step 1
Measure the height of your span
Aluminium is a material that expands and contracts as it is impacted by external weather conditions. When designing and installing Aluminium extrusions that are exposed to external weather, it is highly recommend that you allow for expansion and contraction. Aluminium can expand up to 2mm per 1 meter of extrusion.

For example, if you are joining 2x 5400mm Apollo Two-Piece Aluminium Battens, then the minimum recommended expansion joint between the 5400mm lengths is 11mm.

TIP! Don’t forget to allow for the thickness of your end caps – end caps are 2.5mm thick.

Step 2
Trim the base plate to suit your span
For best performance, the base plate should run the full length of your span.

Step 3
Trim the cover plate to suit your measured span

Step 4
Fix the base plate to your substrate
Secure your cut Base Plate to your substrate with appropriate screws at the recommended centres below.Ensure that the batten cantilevers no more than 400mm off the last fixing. Please be advised that fixings are not included as part of the Apollo Two-Piece Aluminium Batten System.

A screw that is suitable for the materiality of your substrate, with a minimum gauge of 10 is recommended. Two screws should be used in a diagonal arrangement at each fixing point. It is essential that the substrate you are fixing to is plumb and level.Maximum fixing centres of 900mm is recommended (2x screws at 900mm intervals).

In applications where a greater span or cantilever is required (e.g., Over a window); Apollo Aluminium Batten extrusions are capable of 3000mm spans and a 1000mm cantilever, however in these instances, larger screws may be required. This is subject to project engineer approval (by others).

Step 5
Clip the cover plate onto the fixed into position base plate
The connection is designed to be extremely tight once engaged, so best practice is to align the cover and back plates as closely as possible before engaging the clip connection.

TIP! A white rubber mallet must be used to avoid damaging the battens.

Step 6
Clip in end caps
Clip end caps top and bottom of the combined base and cover plates.

Step 7
Install joiners

Step 8
Repeat the process
Continue the same process for the remainder of your Apollo Two-Piece Aluminium battens, ensuring the centres of the installed battens match the centres detailed in the specification.

TIP! In some instances, it may be worth measuring the width of your external application prior to beginning the installation process and confirming the best yield for batten centres to your specification that will work with the width of your external application.

Maintenance

Caring for your Apollo Aluminum Batten product correctly should greatly enhance its longevity. Below are our recommendations for extending the life of your Aluminum system. A simple regular clean will minimise the degradation of your finish from exposure to elements such as dirt and grime, which can build-up over time and be detrimental to your finish. The frequency of a cleaning regiment is dependent on a number of factors(such as environment and exposure). Our recommendation is that the Aluminum Batten system be cleaned once every twelve (12) months and a record of this cleaning is kept.

Optimise performance:
For best performance, we recommend a complete clean of the installed system once all construction works have been completed. This will ensure that any construction materials (such as dirt, plaster, paint, concrete dust etc.)have been removed in a timely manner.

A clean involves using a combination of warm water and a non-abrasive pH neutral detergent solution. All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth, sponge, or a soft natural bristle brush. Ensure material is non-abrasive and no scrubbing is performed, as this may damage the finish on your Aluminum product.

Signs you need to clean:
Please look out for the following signs and if present, increase the frequency of your cleaning regiment:
Signs of weathering (loss of gloss)
 Chalking
Slight changes to the colour of your finish

Strong solvents (thinners or solutions containing chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters or ketones) should not be used during cleaning. If unsure, we recommend testing your cleaning agent on a small, non-visible portion of the Aluminum product and leaving for 24hours to see if there has been any visible change to the finish on your Aluminum product.

Fire Compliance

The Apollo Two-Piece Aluminium Batten System achieves a Group 1 rating as per Section9 (n) of AS5637.1-2015, the determination of the group number is based on the AS/NZS3837-1998 test, and is deemed valid in the cone calorimeter for the assignment of National Construction Code (NCC) group number.

Warranty

For external applications, the Apollo Two-Piece Aluminium Batten system comes with a 10 year warranty. Please contact your local Apollo consultant for your project specific warranty.
