The Role of Battens in Contemporary Ceiling Design
Design Expression ● Acoustic Performance
May 22, 2025
Aluminium batten systems are redefining the role of ceilings in contemporary architecture, shifting them from passive surfaces to active design elements. This article explores how the Apollo+ Aluminium Batten system enables greater design freedom while enhancing acoustic performance, material efficiency, and buildability. It highlights how battens can be used to shape spatial identity, balance form and function, and deliver high-performing ceiling solutions across a wide range of commercial environments.
PROJECTS LOOKBOOK ⇩In contemporary architecture, ceilings are no longer treated as secondary surfaces. They are increasingly viewed as integral to how a space is experienced—defining rhythm, guiding movement, and influencing both visual and acoustic comfort. Within this shift, batten systems have evolved from purely functional components into highly considered architectural elements.
The Apollo+ Aluminium Batten system reflects this progression. Rather than simply supporting a ceiling, it offers a framework through which designers can shape space with greater precision and intent. Linear by nature, battens introduce order and continuity, creating a subtle architectural language overhead that can either recede quietly or assert itself as a defining feature. This flexibility is central to their appeal. Larger profiles can establish a bold, sculptural presence, adding depth and visual weight to expansive interiors. Finer battens, by contrast, allow for a more restrained and refined expression—delivering texture and rhythm without overwhelming the space. It is this range that enables architects to respond directly to the brief, adjusting scale, spacing, and alignment to suit both the function and atmosphere of the environment.
Beyond aesthetics, performance plays an equally critical role. Acoustic control remains a defining requirement across workplaces, education settings, and public environments, where sound quality directly impacts usability. When paired with appropriate acoustic backing, aluminium batten systems can significantly improve sound absorption, reducing reverberation and contributing to a more comfortable, focused interior.
Materiality further reinforces their relevance. Aluminium offers a lightweight yet durable solution, supporting ease of installation while maintaining long-term performance. Its resistance to corrosion and environmental wear ensures consistency over time, while its adaptability allows for a wide range of finishes—from clean, contemporary metallics to timber-look coatings that introduce warmth without compromising compliance.
Sustainability considerations also sit at the forefront of specification. As a recyclable material, aluminium aligns with the growing emphasis on responsible material selection and lifecycle performance. Combined with efficient installation systems, this contributes to reduced waste and improved project outcomes across both construction and long-term use.
What defines batten systems today is not simply their form, but their versatility. They operate across multiple layers of design—resolving aesthetic intent, acoustic performance, and buildability within a single, cohesive system. This integration allows architects to push beyond conventional ceiling treatments, creating environments that are both technically resolved and experientially engaging.
At MBS Architectural, this is where we see the true value of systems like Apollo+. They are not just products, but tools—enabling designers to explore new possibilities while maintaining clarity around performance and delivery. As architectural expectations continue to evolve, battens will play an increasingly prominent role in shaping interior environments. Not as an afterthought, but as a considered design move—one that brings together structure, materiality, and experience into a single, resolved expression overhead.

Case Studies: Battens in Action
KPMG Fit-Out (QLD)
COX Brisbane’s vision for the KPMG office fit-out was one of drama and impact, achieved within strict budgetary constraints. The Apollo Aluminium Batten system’s adaptability was key to realising this vision. By fine-tuning the batten centres, the team was able to craft a design that was both visually captivating and economically viable.

Canaccord Fit-Out
In the Canaccord fit-out, the subtlety of design played a crucial role. Hot Black’s vision for basalt blue aluminium battens, accentuated by sweeping curves, was brought to life using the Apollo system. By creatively reducing the need for end caps and using plasterboard margins to guide the design, the project achieved a unique and cost-effective aesthetic that remains functional and visually appealing.

11 Eastern
At 11 Eastern, Rothelowman Architects sought to strike a balance between bold and refined design elements. The Apollo aluminium battens, substantial in size and striking in finish, were the perfect choice for the building’s double-height entry lobby. The system’s 7mm black acoustic backing not only concealed services but also provided much-needed sound absorption, enhancing the space’s overall comfort.
