11 Eastern does not shy away from contrast — it leans into it. Set within South Melbourne, the project by Rothelowman explores the tension between bold geometry and refined materiality, where strong architectural gestures are carefully balanced against softer curves and a restrained palette. Within this dialogue, the ceiling becomes a defining element, anchoring the space with clarity and intent.
Positioned within a generous double-height entry lobby, the scale demanded a response that could hold its own. The Apollo Aluminium Batten system was selected not simply as a finish, but as a structural expression. At 150 x 50mm profiles set at 200mm centres, the battens introduce a sense of weight and rhythm that reinforces the verticality of the space. Their proportion is deliberate — substantial enough to read from a distance, yet controlled enough to maintain cohesion across the broader interior.
Material contrast plays a central role in the composition. Against a backdrop of soft whites, light stone and timber finishes, the ceiling shifts into something more assertive. The Electro Dark Bronze finish introduces depth and richness, drawing the eye upward and defining the volume with a confident architectural presence. It is a move that does not compete with the surrounding palette, but rather completes it — a counterbalance that gives the space its identity.
