11 Eastern

Commercial

11 Eastern does not shy away from contrast — it leans into it. Set within South Melbourne, the project by Rothelowman explores the tension between bold geometry and refined materiality, where strong architectural gestures are carefully balanced against softer curves and a restrained palette. Within this dialogue, the ceiling becomes a defining element, anchoring the space with clarity and intent.

Positioned within a generous double-height entry lobby, the scale demanded a response that could hold its own. The Apollo Aluminium Batten system was selected not simply as a finish, but as a structural expression. At 150 x 50mm profiles set at 200mm centres, the battens introduce a sense of weight and rhythm that reinforces the verticality of the space. Their proportion is deliberate — substantial enough to read from a distance, yet controlled enough to maintain cohesion across the broader interior.

Material contrast plays a central role in the composition. Against a backdrop of soft whites, light stone and timber finishes, the ceiling shifts into something more assertive. The Electro Dark Bronze finish introduces depth and richness, drawing the eye upward and defining the volume with a confident architectural presence. It is a move that does not compete with the surrounding palette, but rather completes it — a counterbalance that gives the space its identity.

11 Eastern

At 11 Eastern, the architectural language is defined by a careful balance between strength and restraint, where bold interventions are grounded by a disciplined material palette. The space unfolds with clarity, allowing key elements to take focus without overwhelming the overall composition. Through considered use of scale, tone and texture, the interior achieves a sense of depth and presence, creating an environment that feels both elevated and controlled. It is a project that embraces contrast as a design tool, using it to shape a space that is memorable, cohesive and quietly confident in its execution.

Behind this visual strength sits a quieter layer of performance. The integration of a 7mm black acoustic backing provides an NRC of 0.5, softening the acoustic environment while remaining fully concealed.

Services are absorbed into the ceiling plane, allowing the linear expression to remain uninterrupted. The result is a system that performs without distraction, reinforcing the idea that the best detailing is often the least visible.

Installed by Star Ceilings and delivered in collaboration with Hacer, the execution reflects a clear alignment between design ambition and technical delivery. Every line is consistent, every junction resolved, ensuring the ceiling reads as a singular, uninterrupted field.

11 Eastern ultimately demonstrates the power of contrast when handled with precision. It is a space where boldness is not excess, but intention — where scale, material and detail come together to create an environment that feels both composed and unapologetically confident.
