367 Collins Street

For more than three decades, peregrine falcons have made 367 Collins Street their home. When Curzon + Partners reimagined the building’s lobby, that connection became the starting point for an extraordinary architectural gesture - translating the rhythm, grace and movement of flight into a sweeping suspended ceiling installation.

Spanning the lobby and arrival spaces, the installation transforms thousands of individual aluminium tubes into a single fluid composition. Working alongside FDC Construction & Fit-Out and Esjay Commercial Plastering, MBS Architectural collaborated with SAS International to bring the ambitious concept into built form.

Across approximately 1,200 square metres, 3,136 individual tubes and more than 7,354 linear metres of material come together to create a ceiling that appears to shift and move as you travel beneath it.

The 50mm aluminium tubes were custom curved to form the fluid geometry of the design. Rather than following a conventional flat or linear ceiling language, the tubes rise, fall and transition across the installation, creating changes in depth and perspective. From one position, the ceiling reads as a series of disciplined lines; from another, those same lines gather into a dynamic sculptural form.

Materiality adds another dimension. Each aluminium tube is finished in a sublimated timber effect, bringing the visual warmth and character of timber to the precision and versatility of aluminium. Against the scale of the lobby, the finish softens the installation while allowing its geometry to remain the dominant architectural expression.

The sheer scale of the installation is part of what gives it its presence. More than seven kilometres of aluminium tube extend through the space, yet the ceiling never feels repetitive or uniform. Instead, the changing curvature creates a sense of progression, allowing the installation to reveal itself differently as people move through the lobby and arrival areas. What is experienced from below is not simply a ceiling pattern, but a continually changing architectural perspective.

Delivering that expression across thousands of individual components demanded precision. Curves needed to flow, spacing needed to remain controlled and every tube needed to contribute to the larger composition. It is this relationship between repetition and movement that gives the installation its impact - individual elements becoming almost imperceptible as they combine to form one continuous architectural gesture.

The ceiling sits at the heart of a wider repositioning of 367 Collins Street, where the arrival experience has been reconsidered around workplace, hospitality and connection. Within that broader transformation, the installation establishes a distinctive visual identity from the moment tenants and visitors enter the building, drawing the eye through the lobby and reinforcing a sense of movement overhead.

There is something fitting about an architectural feature inspired by flight being created from such a disciplined system of individual parts. Through curvature, repetition and carefully resolved detailing, a simple 50mm aluminium tube becomes something far more expressive. The result is a ceiling that feels almost in motion - a sculptural interpretation of a story that belongs uniquely to 367 Collins Street.
