Lotte Duty Free – Melbourne Airport T2 Arrivals

Infrastructure

Working alongside Bates Smart, Maz Group, and Rising Star, we delivered a ceiling solution that plays a central role in shaping this experience. Spanning approximately 1,000 square metres, the project combines SAS 200 metal ceilings with a bespoke SAS 330 system, developed specifically to respond to the spatial and experiential brief.

The retail space stretches across both sides of the concourse, and the ceiling becomes a key tool for wayfinding. Through the use of separate toned mesh lay-in panels within the bespoke SAS 330 system, the ceiling subtly guides movement, helping customers navigate between zones without the need for overt signage. This approach creates a seamless flow through the store, reinforcing the idea of a curated journey rather than a traditional retail layout.

Each retail zone carries its own identity. The beauty section is defined by a warmer palette, allowing individual brands to sit comfortably within a calm, neutral backdrop. In contrast, the liquor area introduces a more moody, industrial tone, drawing inspiration from the atmosphere of a Melbourne CBD bar. The ceiling adapts to these shifts, supporting each environment while maintaining a cohesive overall language. A key moment within the space is the central corridor, where SAS 200 perforated metal panels create a striking visual spine. Here, mirror-finish tiles introduce reflection and movement, amplifying light and adding a layer of visual complexity.

This area also demanded a high level of coordination, with significant building services integrated directly into the ceiling system during the shop drawing process to maintain clarity and alignment. Extensive prototyping was undertaken to ensure the bespoke SAS 330 H Grid ceiling achieved the required design intent. This process allowed the system to be refined before manufacture, ensuring both visual precision and buildability.

Performance was equally considered. Within the central corridor, acoustic fleece combined with an additional pad was incorporated to enhance sound absorption, achieving an overall NRC of 0.90. This contributes to a more comfortable and controlled environment, essential within a busy airport setting.

The result is a retail space where ceiling design goes beyond function, becoming an active participant in the customer experience. Through careful coordination, bespoke development and a clear response to the architectural vision, the project brings together movement, atmosphere and performance in a way that feels distinctly Melbourne.
