Having previously collaborated with Grimshaw on the neighbouring 35 Collins Street lobby, we brought a strong understanding of the precinct, the architectural language, and the expectations that come with working at this scale and profile. The success of the earlier refurbishment provided both technical grounding and design confidence, helping to inform material selection, detailing strategies, and the approach to integrating architectural lining systems within a prominent civic interior.

Working closely with Grimshaw throughout design development and delivery, we combined our Apollo+ Aluminium Batten system with SAS Metal Ceiling systems, tailoring both through bespoke profiles, specialised finishes, and project-specific detailing. This collaborative approach allowed us to support Grimshaw’s design intent while maintaining constructability, performance, and clarity across a complex lobby environment.

A defining feature of the refurbishment is the use of Apollo+ Aluminium Battens in a bespoke 25d x 40w concave profile, finished in Anodised Monaco Stone. The concave geometry introduces subtle depth and softness overhead, enhancing the sense of arrival while maintaining a restrained material palette. Integrated acoustic backing delivers an NRC of 0.50, contributing to a more comfortable and controlled lobby environment.

The lobby refurbishment at 55 Collins Street marks the next chapter in the ongoing evolution of Collins Place, one of Melbourne’s most recognisable commercial precincts and a key Mirvac asset. Designed by Grimshaw Architects, the project sought to deliver a contemporary arrival experience that feels calm, refined, and unmistakably modern, while remaining respectful of the building’s architectural legacy.

Complementing this, bespoke SAS Metal Ceiling panels of various sizes were integrated across the space, providing a crisp, high-performing ceiling plane with an NRC of 1.0. Together, the two systems work in harmony, balancing texture and rhythm with acoustic performance across approximately 1,200m² of aluminium linings.

A critical part of our contribution was the development of bespoke trims and componentry. These custom elements resolved one-off junctions and transitions throughout the lobby, allowing each of the systems to integrate seamlessly with surrounding architectural elements. This level of detailing was essential to achieving the clarity and refinement central to Grimshaw’s design philosophy.

The completed lobby demonstrates how adaptable proprietary systems, when paired with collaborative design thinking, can be transformed into highly tailored architectural solutions. The result is a refined, contemporary arrival space that respects its context while confidently signalling the future of Collins Place.
