AMP Fit-Out

Fit-Out

AMP’s fit-out is a project driven by perception — a space where the ceiling is not simply seen, but experienced in motion. Designed by Hassell and delivered by Buildcorp, the 1200m² workplace explores how subtle shifts in geometry can transform a familiar system into something far more dynamic. The ambition was clear: to recreate the directional quality of expanded mesh using a linear aluminium batten system, without compromising the clarity and control that battens provide.

Achieving this required a departure from convention. Traditional batten systems are typically installed perpendicular to their supporting structure, resulting in a consistent and predictable ceiling plane. Here, that logic was reworked. In collaboration with our manufacturing partner, a bespoke bracket was developed to allow each aluminium batten to be installed in a cranked position at a precise 30° angle. This single move redefined the entire ceiling, introducing a directional quality that shifts as the user moves through the space.

The effect is immediate yet subtle. Sightlines into the ceiling plenum open and close depending on position, creating a constantly evolving visual field. It is a ceiling that responds to movement, offering moments of transparency and concealment in equal measure. Despite this complexity, the overall reading remains controlled — a consistent linear rhythm that anchors the space while allowing variation to emerge through perspective.

AMP Fit-Out

At AMP, the ceiling becomes an active participant in the spatial experience, introducing a sense of movement and variation that unfolds as users navigate the workplace. The design balances openness and control, allowing services and structure to sit comfortably within a cohesive architectural framework. Through careful manipulation of angle, light and rhythm, the space achieves a layered quality that feels both refined and engaging. It is an environment where subtle innovation drives impact, creating a workplace that rewards movement, perspective and attention to detail.

This approach also supports a highly resolved integration of services. The open nature of the batten system allows the majority of building services to sit above the ceiling plane, maintaining a clean and uninterrupted finish below. Lighting, mechanical and other elements are absorbed into the broader composition, reinforcing the idea that the best detailing is often the least visible.

Finished in a crisp powder coated RAL 9003 at 20% sheen, the battens maintain a refined, neutral presence, allowing geometry and shadow to define the experience. Acoustic performance, treated at the underside of the slab to achieve an NRC of 0.70, ensures the space performs as effectively as it reads. Installed by Esjay Commercial Plastering, the execution reflects a high level of precision, ensuring each batten aligns perfectly within the broader system.

AMP’s fit-out ultimately demonstrates how innovation can emerge from rethinking the familiar. By adjusting a single detail — the angle of a batten — the project transforms a standard ceiling into a dynamic architectural feature, one that engages with movement, light and perspective to create a space that feels both considered and quietly expressive.
