Ashurst Fit-Out

Fit-Out

Ashurst’s fit-out at 80 Collins Street unfolds with a sense of quiet confidence — a space defined not by singular gestures, but by the way each element works in harmony.

Designed by Bates Smart and delivered by FDC, the interior is anchored by a sculptural, multi-level staircase that moves fluidly through the volume, setting the tone for a workplace shaped by curves, light and precision. Within this composition, the ceiling becomes an extension of that movement, reinforcing the architectural language rather than competing with it.

The introduction of Ø25mm aluminium tubular battens establishes a soft, continuous rhythm across the 600m² ceiling plane. Set at 50mm centres and finished in a crisp powder coated white, the system reads as both lightweight and controlled — a linear field that complements the sweeping geometry below.

The repetition of the tubes creates a sense of order, while their slender profile ensures the ceiling remains visually open, allowing light to move freely through the space.

As with many projects of this nature, the success lies in the detail. Service integration has been carefully resolved, with elements organised into dedicated zones that sit comfortably within the ceiling layout.

Ashurst Fit-Out

Within Ashurst’s workplace, the design moves with a quiet fluidity, where form and function are carefully balanced to create an environment that feels both refined and enduring. The space is shaped by a disciplined approach to detail, where every element is considered in relation to the whole, allowing the interior to feel cohesive and uninterrupted. Beneath its apparent simplicity lies a highly resolved system that accommodates performance, maintenance and longevity without compromising the visual intent. It is an interior that rewards subtlety, demonstrating how thoughtful coordination can elevate a space into something both timeless and highly functional.

Perimeter conditions are equally considered, with plasterboard margin details allowing the battens to float cleanly above a defined upstand. These transitions are subtle, but they play a critical role in maintaining the clarity of the overall design — a reminder that restraint is often what defines a resolved space.

Future-proofing the environment introduced another layer of complexity. Access to services above the ceiling was essential, yet the integrity of the batten system needed to remain intact. The solution came through the integration of 70 discrete tubular access panels, seamlessly embedded within the ceiling plane. Almost imperceptible, they allow ongoing maintenance without disruption, ensuring the system performs long after installation without compromising its appearance.

Acoustic performance, treated at the underside of the slab, achieves an NRC of 0.70, supporting a balanced working environment where sound is controlled but not over-absorbed. Installed by Paracon, the execution reflects a high level of coordination, ensuring alignment, spacing and detailing remain consistent throughout.

Ashurst ultimately demonstrates how complexity can be resolved through clarity. It is a space where architecture, services and performance are brought into alignment, resulting in an environment that feels effortless, yet is underpinned by a deep level of technical consideration.
