Docklands Primary School

Education

Docklands Primary School forms part of a broader vision to reshape educational environments across Victoria — a precinct where architecture is tasked with supporting new ways of learning, collaboration and interaction.

Designed by COX Architecture and delivered by Monaco Hickey, the project brings together a series of large, open-plan learning spaces that prioritise flexibility and connection. Within this framework, the challenge becomes less about enclosure and more about control — particularly when it comes to sound.

Open-plan environments, while spatially generous, introduce a level of acoustic complexity that demands careful resolution. Without intervention, sound travels freely, creating overlap, distraction and a loss of clarity. In response, the ceiling becomes a critical layer of performance. The integration of high-performance mineral fibre ceiling tiles provides a solution that is both precise and unobtrusive, delivering the level of sound attenuation required without compromising the architectural intent.

Installed across the 2,500m² facility, the 600 x 600 tiles at 35mm thickness achieve an NRC of 0.85 and a CAC of 43dB, ensuring both sound absorption and sound blocking are addressed simultaneously.

Docklands Primary School

At Docklands Primary School, the architecture reflects a shift toward more open, connected learning environments, where flexibility and interaction are central to the design. Within this openness, the need for control becomes critical, and the space responds with a carefully balanced acoustic strategy that supports both collaboration and focus. The interiors maintain a sense of clarity and lightness, allowing students and educators to move fluidly between different modes of learning without disruption. It is an environment shaped by both intention and performance, where subtle interventions create meaningful improvements in how the space is experienced day to day.

Open-plan environments, while spatially generous, introduce a level of acoustic complexity that demands careful resolution. The integration of high-performance mineral fibre ceiling tiles provides a solution that is both precise and unobtrusive, delivering the level of sound attenuation required without compromising the architectural intent.

This dual performance is essential in educational settings, where adjacent learning zones operate concurrently and require a degree of acoustic separation. The result is an environment where noise is managed, conversations remain intelligible, and concentration is supported across a variety of teaching modes.

Visually, the system has been resolved with restraint. The use of a slimline 15mm two-way grid minimises the presence of the ceiling structure, allowing the surface to read as clean and consistent. Finished in laminated white, the tiles reinforce a sense of brightness and clarity, complementing the openness of the spaces below. Installed by Double Time Plaster, the ceiling system has been executed with precision, maintaining alignment and consistency across the expansive floorplate.

Docklands Primary School ultimately demonstrates how performance-driven design can operate quietly in the background, shaping the experience of a space without drawing attention to itself. It is a project where the ceiling does more than complete the room — it enables it, supporting the evolving demands of contemporary education through thoughtful material selection and careful integration.
