Flemington Community Hub

Education

Flemington Community Hub is not a project that reveals itself all at once. It unfolds gradually, through layers of complexity, coordination and craft, each decision building toward a singular architectural moment. From the outset, Croxon Ramsay set an ambitious brief — one that pushed far beyond conventional ceiling design. Curved metal baffles, micro-perforated and densely packed with mineral wool, were to flow across the space in a series of evolving forms. Not one curve, but seventy-six distinct radii, each requiring careful resolution, each contributing to a ceiling that would feel both expressive and controlled.

What followed was a process defined by precision and persistence. One sample at a time. One meeting at a time. One drawing at a time. In total, seventy-six drawing sign-offs were required to bring clarity to the complexity, ensuring every curve aligned with the architectural intent. It was a meticulous journey, where design ambition was matched with technical discipline, and where no detail was left unresolved.

Working closely with Croxon Ramsay, we developed a bespoke perforated metal baffle solution that balanced acoustic performance with visual impact. Each 200 x 50mm baffle was micro-perforated and internally treated with mineral wool, achieving an NRC of 0.80 while maintaining a refined, lightweight appearance.

Flemington Community Hub

Step inside Flemington Community Hub and you are immediately drawn upward, where a sculptural ceiling of flowing, pearl gold baffles moves effortlessly across the space, creating a sense of rhythm, warmth and visual energy. What appears seamless is the result of extraordinary coordination - a highly resolved system of curved elements, each uniquely shaped yet working in harmony to form a cohesive architectural gesture. Beyond its striking presence, the ceiling quietly enhances the way the space feels and functions, softening sound and shaping atmosphere. It is a project that celebrates precision and persistence, where technical complexity and design ambition come together to create an environment that feels both considered and memorable.

The decision to finish the system in a vibrant pearl gold powder coat elevated the design further, introducing a sense of warmth and luminosity that shifts subtly with light and movement throughout the day.

Manufactured in the UK and delivered to site with exacting precision, the system required an equally considered installation approach. The team at REQ Construction, under the guidance of McCorkell Construction, approached the build with a level of care befitting the design. Piece by piece, the ceiling came together — a complex puzzle resolved through skill, coordination and attention to detail.

The result is a ceiling that does more than perform; it defines the space. A sweeping, sculptural form that captures both movement and rhythm, while quietly delivering the acoustic control required of a community environment. Flemington Community Hub stands as a testament to what can be achieved when ambition, collaboration and craftsmanship align — a project where complexity is not simplified, but embraced and resolved with clarity.
