Kyneton Primary School is a project that finds its strength in restraint — a space where clarity of design allows material and performance to take centre stage. Designed by Gray Puksand and delivered by Lloyd Group, the 2,500m² educational environment embraces a philosophy where simplicity is not a limitation, but a deliberate and refined outcome.
At the heart of the school sits a large, open-plan multipurpose hall — a space defined by scale, activity and adaptability. In environments such as this, the challenge is not only visual, but acoustic. The introduction of white-finished wood wool panels across the ceiling and upper wall surfaces provides a solution that is both robust and considered. Their natural composition delivers high levels of sound absorption while offering the durability required for a high-use school setting, where impact resistance is as critical as performance.
The result is a hall that feels calm despite its openness — a space where sound is controlled, allowing assemblies, activities and everyday use to coexist without overwhelming the environment. The texture of the wood wool introduces a subtle depth to the otherwise restrained palette, softening the volume without distracting from the overall architectural clarity.
